SAN JUAN (2009 FIBA Americas Championship) - Canada started in an historic fashion at the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship after crushing Mexico 95-40 on day 2.
Mexico had the lowest scoring output of any team in FIBA Americas Championship with 40, the second lowest was Panama and Cuba with 52 in the 1992 and 1999 tournaments, respectively.
The first quarter was for Canada 30-13 as Tyler Kepkay finished it with a basket from the other side of the court. Olu Famutimi led with 10 points.
In the second quarter the Canadian defense kept Mexico out of the game while offensively they were sharper than the warm up games last week at the Marchand Continental Championship Cup. At halftime the score was 49-21.
Canada continued, having a biggest lead of 55 points and having a feast off turnovers (14 pts) and second chance points (11). They finished with 19 three pointers and allowed Mexico to shoot 22% from the field (13-60) which is also a tournament record.
Andy Rautins led Canada with 18 points while Carl English followed with 17 and Jermaine Bucknor along with Joel Anthony had 11 each.
Noe Alonzo was the only scorer in double digits for Mexico with 10 points.
