America celebrates their big event

The 2009 FIBA Americas Championship returns with ten of the best national teams and players in the zone who will try to get one of the four qualifying berths in the 2010 FIBA World Championship to be played in Turkey.

FIBA Americas organizes this event every two years and are qualifiers for Olympics and FIBA World Championships. This tournament, which is a World Championship qualifier, was celebrated for the last time in 2005 in the Dominican Republic where Brazil won gold by beating Argentina in the finals.

Puerto Rico will host this event once again with a lot of experience hosting this type of event (1980, 1993, 1999 and 2003) and also has a rich history in international basketball. Basketball in Puerto Rico is the first sport in the country by bringing a lot of fans to the coliseums to every event.

The Puerto Ricans will try to erase the memory of the 2005 FIBA Americas Championship where they didn't qualify directly to the 2006 FIBA World Championship and were one of the four wild cards invited by FIBA. With a balanced team they will try to be one of the four teams that qualify directly.

Each country had done everything possible to attract the best players to their national teams in order to qualify.

The 2010 FIBA World Championship will have a total of 24 countries playing in a high quality competition which was a complete success in Japan (2006).

The participating countries in the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship are Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, US Virgin Islands and Venezuela.

Some countries have missed the FIBA World Championship for a long time, some of them are:
Mexico: 1974
Dominican Republic: 1978
Cuba: 1986
Uruguay: 1986
Canada: 2002
US Virgin Islands have never played in a World Championship.

Argentina, Brazil, USA, Puerto Rico and Venezuela participated in the 2006 FIBA World Championship.

The United States was the only representative of America with a medal by winning bronze over Argentina. United States already qualified for the 2010 FIBA World Championship by winning gold in the 2008 Olympic Games.America celebrates their big event.
